Christchurch man jailed for $1.4m tax evasion
Daniel Robert Clarke was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for evading nearly $1.4 million in tax from his property maintenance company.
What happened
Daniel Robert Clarke, owner of property maintenance company Phil Clarke and Son Limited, was sentenced to two years and three months in Christchurch District Court on Friday after evading company taxes of nearly $1.4 million. He faced 21 charges of aiding and abetting and 15 charges of tax evasion. From January 2023 to July 2025, the company failed to pay $778,852.25 in PAYE, student loan repayments and KiwiSaver contributions that had been deducted from employees' wages across 22 occasions. It also failed to pay $610,005 in GST across 15 periods. Clarke deliberately diverted the money to pay creditors, employee wages, company expenses and his own living costs, including home renovations. He personally gained about $1.95 million from the company during this period. Even when he sold the renovated house, the proceeds were not used to reduce his tax debt. The company was placed into liquidation in July 2025, and Clarke was declared bankrupt in April 2026. Nearly $800,000 remains owed to Inland Revenue.
Why it matters
This sentencing is part of a broader Inland Revenue tax compliance crackdown documented in recent months. On 26 August, Inland Revenue halted nearly 3000 fraudulent amended tax returns including coordinated schemes spread online. On 4 September, a Northland woman was sentenced for falsely claiming $750,000 in GST using fraudulent receipts, and on 10 September, an Auckland kitchen installer received 26 months for $555,000 in tax fraud. Clarke's case reflects Inland Revenue's intensified enforcement against deliberate tax evasion.
