Luxon chose challenging election date despite Electoral Commission advice for easier alternatives
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon picked 7 November for the election despite the Electoral Commission recommending two more feasible dates, newly released advice shows.
What happened
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon selected 7 November as the election date despite the Electoral Commission favouring two alternatives. In a letter dated 7 August 2025, the chief electoral officer warned Luxon that school and public holidays could reduce voter turnout, and advised avoiding election dates during these times. The commission described the chosen date as "challenging, but manageable", partly because advance voting begins on Labour Day. Two alternatives—17 October and 21 November—were considered "administratively more feasible", as was a range of dates in August and September. Labour is accusing Luxon of "knowingly limiting turnout" and raising concerns that fewer voting booths will open on the public holiday. Labour MP Camilla Belich noted that only two of 22 voting places in her Epsom electorate would be open on 26 October. She argued the decision compounds the government's scrapping of same-day voter enrolment. Luxon announced the date in January as the "logical time" after weighing sporting fixtures and other events, noting that eight of the last 12 elections were held in October or November. National dismissed Labour's criticism as desperation, pointing out the date had been public for nine months.
Why it matters
Young voter enrolment has already dropped to 57.4 percent as of mid-September, with experts citing declining trust in politics and a new October 25 enrolment deadline that risks further losses. The election date choice adds another potential barrier to voting at a time when youth turnout is already under pressure.
