Fuel prices top $4 a litre as motorists face months of high costs

Petrol prices in parts of New Zealand have exceeded $4 a litre, with experts warning relief is unlikely before Christmas.

The Gist

What happened

Motorists in some parts of New Zealand are being charged more than $4 a litre for 95-octane petrol, with BP in New Lynn, Auckland advertising $3.11 a litre on Friday and 91-octane at $3.89. Gaspy, a fuel price monitoring app, recorded a national average of $3.80, up 11% over 28 days, while 91-octane averaged $3.61 and diesel $3.23. AA spokesperson Terry Collins said a handful of stations had crossed the $4 barrier but many sat just under it, describing it as a psychological threshold petrol stations were reluctant to breach. He does not expect much relief soon. Card spending data showed fuel expenditure rose 2.9% in September. ANZ and senior economist Miles Workman pointed to exceptionally high freight costs, a weak New Zealand dollar, global oil prices and crack spreads as factors keeping prices elevated. Workman said Middle East conflicts and the time needed to restore lost oil production meant price pressures could remain high well into the future, and economies rebuilding fuel stocks could drive prices even higher.

Why it matters

New Zealanders have been turning to buy now pay later services to pay for fuel as prices surge, with a third of businesses raising prices due to energy costs as of 8 October. Energy costs have become the second-biggest concern for New Zealand business leaders. This milestone of prices topping $4 a litre comes after petrol had already climbed to over $3.50 while crude oil costs fell, driven by refining and shipping expenses amid Middle East disruptions.

Where the outlets differ

The NZ Herald led with the $4 price point and linked it to retail sector impact, while RNZ and others emphasised the longer-term outlook. NZ Herald's first story frame focused on hospitality spending falling 2.3% alongside fuel costs rising, connecting the price surge to broader consumer spending patterns; the other outlets led with the price milestone itself and future price expectations.
