Ministry of Regulation recommends legalising plug-in solar

The Ministry for Regulation has recommended New Zealand legalise plug-in solar systems as part of efforts to simplify solar installation.

Skinny McBuntu

A Ministry for Regulation report recommends the Government legalise plug-in solar in New Zealand, among broader suggestions to simplify the solar installation process. Plug-in solar systems are portable, simple-to-use kits that plug directly into wall sockets, currently banned due to safety concerns about their inverters. The recommendation comes with findings that these safety risks can be managed through product certification and output limits, as is already done in countries like Germany and the UK. The review's 15 recommendations are expected to reduce residential solar approval costs and timelines significantly.
