Government issues first petroleum exploration permit since lifting 2018 ban
New Zealand has granted its first new petroleum exploration permit since overturning a three-year ban on oil and gas exploration.
The coalition Government announced the first new petroleum exploration permit on 29 July, just one year after lifting the ban on petroleum exploration that had been in place since 2018. The announcement came nine days after New Zealand First pledged to invest $1 billion in a National Subsurface Development Survey to support the sector's revival.
