What happened

Five Kiwis have split last night's $1 million Lotto First Division jackpot, each winning $200,000. Three of the winning tickets were sold at Challenge Mt Albert in Auckland, Paper Plus Morrinsville, and New World Stanmore in Christchurch, with the other two sold via MyLotto to players from Rodney and Central Otago. Seven players also won $39,215 each in Second Division. Powerball was not struck, lifting next Wednesday's jackpot from $10 million to $12 million. Strike Four also went unclaimed, growing from $400,000 to $700,000. The winning numbers were 19, 5, 21, 12, 38 and 24, with Bonus ball 17 and Powerball 7.

Why it matters

This draw follows Lotto's September 13 rule changes that made Powerball harder to win by adding four extra balls to the draw machine, increasing the odds. Since the changes took effect, the jackpot has grown significantly — from $10 million at the time of the September 6 Father's Day draw that was won, it has now reached $12 million after this draw produced no Powerball winner.
