Wellington councils divided on super-region merger plan
Wellington regional mayors failed to reach consensus on a proposal to merge eight councils into a super-region.
Wellington City councillors voted to submit a super-region proposal to the government, which could create a Wellington-Wairarapa unitary council by merging eight councils together. Regional mayors were set to decide on the exact model for the merger. However, despite hours of discussions, the mayors could not reach a consensus across all parties on the way forward.
