A SpaceX rocket upper stage collided with the moon's surface at approximately 8700 kilometres per hour, producing an impact equivalent to three tons of TNT. Although the collision itself was not directly observed, astronomers using a telescope in Chile detected the debris plume resulting from the crash. Scientists had predicted the unintentional impact and were monitoring the event closely.
