Family narrowly escapes collapsing cliff in Awakino Gorge
A New Plymouth family escaped by seconds when a cliff gave way onto State Highway 3 in the Awakino Gorge in the early hours of the morning.
A family driving from New Plymouth to Auckland through the Awakino Gorge narrowly avoided a collapsing cliff that fell onto State Highway 3 early in the morning. They described going into survival mode as they watched the bank come down in the darkness. Parts of the highway had been closed following heavy rain and an earthquake near Taumarunui, and the gorge was set to reopen under single-lane traffic controls.
