Economic recovery unevenly spread across New Zealand regions

Rural southern and provincial districts are booming while urban areas and the North Island struggle with economic weakness.

New Zealand's economic recovery is concentrated in specific regions rather than nationwide. Southern farming-focused districts like Southland, Canterbury and Otago are experiencing strong growth driven by high commodity prices, good growing conditions and mining activity, while northern urban centres including Auckland and Wellington are stalled or declining. The recovery affects only about a third of the country's population, with rural communities benefiting from record prices for beef, lamb, dairy and wool, though not all farming areas are equally positioned to capitalise on these gains.
