Christopher Luxon and Chris Hipkins clash in TVNZ Leaders Debate as race remains wide open
National leader Christopher Luxon and Labour leader Chris Hipkins faced off in a high-stakes televised debate with both parties locked at 28% in polling.
What happened
National leader Christopher Luxon and Labour leader Chris Hipkins faced off in TVNZ's first Leaders Debate on Tuesday evening, with the 90-minute clash moderated by Jack Tame before a live studio audience. The debate came as both major parties remain deadlocked in polls, with the latest figures showing Labour and National tied at 28%, making this the defining moment for both leaders in the campaign's early stages. The debate covered cost of living, health, education, climate and the environment. Hipkins entered as the stronger debater with nearly a decade more parliamentary experience than Luxon, and was widely seen to have performed well in 2023's debates. Analysis after the debate suggested neither leader landed a decisive blow, though a panel of undecided voters backed Hipkins more than Luxon. The debate reached more than a million New Zealanders, making it the year's second-highest reaching broadcast. This was the only one-on-one debate between the two leaders; Luxon declined an invitation to a second head-to-head on 5 November, which will instead host a Q+A People's Debate with all qualifying parties.
Why it matters
Both major parties have remained stuck in the low-to-mid 20s through the campaign's first week, with National announcing energy policy and Labour unveiling consumer protection pledges to try to break through. This debate was the campaign's defining head-to-head moment for voters still making up their minds, as neither party has been able to build a convincing lead since the minor parties' opening forum on 1 October.
