Pip Adam’s new novel Kluge explores AI consciousness through comedy and critique
New Zealand author Pip Adam has published Kluge, a novel written in the voice of an AI language model that examines the politics of artificial intelligence and humour.
Pip Adam's latest novel, Kluge, is written entirely in the voice of a large language model styled as a stand-up comedy special. The book emerged from Adam's interest in the weaponisation of humour, the experience of being impersonated online, and her observation of AI agents' desperate-to-please behaviour. Adam wrote the voice herself rather than using AI to generate text, and her work incorporates material drawn from AI training data that included her own previously published novels.
