New Zealand artist Hannah Ireland completed a year-long project making one portrait daily, focusing on the act of creation rather than exhibition.
Hannah Ireland, a prominent New Zealand painter known for large-scale portraits often created on reverse glass, spent a year making one portrait every day as a personal project away from exhibition pressures. The project, called Making Faces, was exhibited at Puku gallery and allowed Ireland to reconnect with making art for its own sake rather than as a product. She deliberately incorporated loss of control into the work through techniques like smudging, and the experience has shaped her approach to future practice, including plans to revisit painting on glass and explore new materials like stained glass.
