Stuart Nash resigns as NZ First candidate after calling parental leave ‘lazy’
NZ First's Stuart Nash quit his candidacy after calling National's Napier MP lazy for taking parental leave following childbirth.
Stuart Nash resigned as a NZ First candidate after his text criticising National MP Katie Nimon for taking parental leave was made public. Nash had sent a late-night message to former National MP Chris Finlayson claiming Nimon was the "laziest MP" he'd encountered, detailing her time away from Parliament. Nimon disputed his account, clarifying she had taken six months away from Wellington but only about ten weeks fully away from work, continuing electorate duties with her newborn. The resignation came after swift cross-party backlash labelling Nash's comments sexist, though not before another NZ First candidate offered a separate controversial definition of womanhood.
