US imposes 12.5% tariff on New Zealand exports citing forced labour concerns

New Zealand's special agricultural trade envoy Nathan Guy says exporters across the board are bracing for more uncertainty.

Analysis – The US government is unlikely to budge on the new round of trade tariffs they have slapped on most imports from New Zealand, writes Corin Dann.

"They're looking for any way to put a tariff rate back on," the trade minister said, adding that Trump was "going to do" what he was going to do.

The US says it's to combat imports made with forced labour – a claim previously rejected by New Zealand.

The US president has confirmed plans to impose double digit tariffs on 60 countries – including NZ – after an investigation into goods allegedly made with forced labour.
