Methanex to idle Taranaki plant in 2027 after 40 years
Methanol producer Methanex will sell its gas contracts and indefinitely idle its Taranaki operations from early 2027, affecting about 300 workers.
Methanex, the country's largest gas user, has agreed to sell all its remaining gas entitlements to Genesis Energy and will cease operations in the first quarter of 2027. The closure ends over four decades of methanol production in Taranaki, with the company citing declining domestic gas availability and no clear pathway to new supply as reasons for the shutdown. About 95 percent of the plant's methanol production was exported to customers in the Asia Pacific region. The decision affects approximately 300 employees.
