A 21.7-metre pygmy blue whale has washed up on a West Coast beach near Westport and will be buried in the sand.
A pygmy blue whale measuring 21.7 metres long washed ashore on Carter's Beach near Westport on the West Coast. The whale, estimated to weigh around 20 tonnes, drew crowds to the beach. Department of Conservation staff are working with contractors to bury the whale's body in the sand near the dunes.
