Hiroshima and Nagasaki mark 81st anniversary of atomic bombings
Japan's two cities devastated by U.S. atomic bombs 81 years ago held memorial ceremonies, with mayors calling for an end to nuclear weapons.
Hiroshima and Nagasaki observed the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombings on Thursday and Sunday respectively. Hiroshima's ceremony drew about 50,000 people including representatives from some 120 countries and regions. Both cities' mayors used the occasions to criticise nuclear weapons, with Hiroshima's mayor opposing their use as deterrence and Nagasaki's mayor calling them absolute evil. A diplomatic incident also emerged when Taiwan's top economic representative in Japan boycotted Nagasaki's ceremony over seating arrangements.
