What happened

A 16-year-old shooter entered Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon on Thursday afternoon and opened fire, killing three children aged 5, 8 and 11, and one teacher. A seventh child and another teacher were taken to hospital with critical injuries. Police received a call at around 1pm about shots fired into a car outside the school, followed by multiple calls reporting someone shooting inside the building. Officers arrived within minutes and found the suspect already dead. An armed community member who saw the suspect enter the school pursued him inside and shot him dead, preventing further casualties. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek thanked the community member for their intervention. The school, which serves about 450 students in kindergarten through fifth grade, was placed under lockdown and students were evacuated to a separate location for reunification with families.
