A climber fell approximately 200 metres into a crevasse on Mount Aspiring during a night-time climb. Rescuers were initially told the fall was likely to be unsurvivable but found the climber alive. The climber's companion hiked three hours to the summit in darkness to call for help, and search and rescue teams raced against worsening weather to complete the rescue.
