Performer and artistic director Kura Te Ua discusses her philosophy on life, work and creating spaces for Māori performing arts ahead of Autaia's upcoming shows.
Kura Te Ua, a performer, choreographer and artistic director, has devoted her career to Māori performing arts through her haka theatre platform Autaia. Ahead of Autaia's return to Auckland's Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre on 20-21 August with hundreds of young performers, Te Ua shares her reflections on purpose, integrity and meaningful work. She emphasises the importance of serving people over projects, avoiding energy vampires, and creating spaces where Māori don't have to ask permission to be themselves. Te Ua believes excellence should be taught rather than lowered, and finds joy in watching young performers discover who they are and realise their capabilities.
