Chilly nights and frosty starts forecast across most of New Zealand this weekend
High pressure will bring sunny days but plummeting overnight temperatures, with frosts possible in parts of the North and South Island.
What happened
Chilly nights and frosty starts are forecast for parts of New Zealand this weekend, with mostly clear and sunny conditions during the day. MetService meteorologist John Law said high pressure will keep conditions dry and settled across most of the country, but temperatures will fall sharply overnight. Waikato temperatures will drop to 2C or 3C overnight into Sunday, with frosts possible in Waikato, inland Bay of Plenty, Taupō, and inland parts of the South Island. Auckland will see overnight lows of about 7C or 8C with clear skies on Saturday night. The high-pressure system will keep conditions settled through Sunday and early next week, with daytime temperatures gradually warming. Some showers may affect parts of the South Island including Fiordland and Southland, expected to clear. Southerly swells could make conditions rougher along eastern coastlines, though the Bay of Plenty and Auckland's eastern harbours will be more sheltered.
Why it matters
This continues the sharp swing from the wintry blast that brought snow and flooding earlier in the week. While the southerly cold persists with frosty overnight temperatures, conditions stabilise over the weekend with settled, sunny days as the high-pressure system moves in.
