Business groups call for operational split of New Zealand’s major electricity generators
Two Auckland business groups are pushing for the country's four largest power companies to separate their generation and retail operations.
The Auckland Business Chamber and Northern Infrastructure Forum released a report calling for the operational separation of New Zealand's four major gentailers and a Crown-backed contracting scheme to boost investment in new electricity generation. The groups argue that the current market structure rewards scarcity because the gentailers control about 85% of generation and 95% of firming capacity.
