Bürgen bread to exit New Zealand as Australian owner halts production
New Zealand will stop making Bürgen bread after its Australian owner George Weston Foods decides not to continue production locally.
Bürgen, a bread brand that has sold in New Zealand for nearly 40 years, will cease production here as its current owner opts to keep it only in Australia. The bread was created in Auckland in 1987 by master baker Doug Leighton and was purchased by Australian company George Weston Foods five years later. Its German-sounding name, complete with an umlaut, gave the product a continental appeal despite having no actual German origins.
