Aftershocks expected for months after Taumarunui earthquake
The largest recorded earthquake in the Taumarunui area struck early Saturday, with a seismologist warning aftershocks could continue for months.
An earthquake struck at 4.51am on Saturday, centred 5km south-west of Taumarunui at a depth of 9km. It was the largest quake ever recorded in the area. A seismologist said aftershocks are likely to continue for months. Residents as far away as the Kapiti Coast received phone alerts about the tremor.
