The Gist

What happened

Danny Watson, the former Newstalk ZB Afternoons host, has died aged 73 after a short illness, surrounded by family. Watson began his broadcasting career on the children's television programmes Spot On and What Now? before moving to radio, where his infectious energy made him a natural fit. He hosted Newstalk ZB's Afternoons from 2000 to 2015, including a notable live broadcast from Scott Base in Antarctica in November 2014. He is survived by his wife Teresa, four children and six grandchildren. NZME chief executive Michael Boggs said Watson had a gift for connecting with listeners and that his voice was part of everyday life for many New Zealanders. The family asked that in lieu of flowers, people donate to hospice and encouraged others to share a good story, check in on neighbours, and hold loved ones close in Watson's honour.
