Coroner warns of danger after impaired driver kills passenger in Mount Maunganui crash
A coroner has criticised an intoxicated and suspended driver whose dangerous behaviour led to a crash that killed his best friend.
A passenger died when an impaired driver ran a red light and collided with a heavy truck at the intersection of Hewletts Road and Aerodrome Road in Mount Maunganui on 27 December 2023. The coroner found the driver's behaviour had become increasingly dangerous leading up to the crash and that the vehicle was mechanically unsafe. The coroner issued a warning about the risks of getting into vehicles with impaired drivers.
