Two proposed data centres—one 250 megawatts in Taranaki and another 280 megawatts in Southland—could draw up to 13% of New Zealand's annual electricity supply when fully operational. This level of demand could worsen the "dry year problem" where cold winters and low water levels in hydroelectric dams already cause power price spikes. Solutions include requiring data centres to fund new renewable generation, allowing them to reduce power during grid stress, or building additional power plants, but timing challenges mean large demand could arrive before new supply is ready.
